[About CAM][Mission Statement]
Mission Statement
Circle of the African Moon (CAM), is a non-profit, national, religio-spiritual organisation. It is a body of members with varying Pagan beliefs and practices.

Aim:

To balance the wisdom and benefits of ancient Pagan ways with the circumstances and demands of modern Pagan life.

Objectives:

To provide a supportive and meaningful context for the daily and lifelong practice of Pagan faiths and ways of life. It does this through:

  • open (public) esbats, sabats, and other interventions
  • it makes available teaching and inner workings through its strong and well-formulated Wicca and Pagan-specific syllabus.
  • short courses in Wicca and other Pagan paths are offered, designed to take the seeker into degree or other inner training
  • conservation efforts
  • sustained guidance programmes
  • be a proactive educational network dedicated to correcting misinformation about Paganism. It does this through:
    • (careful) interaction with the media
    • engage in dialogue, interfaith activities, etc.

We reject any activity that does not comply with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Law created and upheld by the South African government.

CAM defines Paganism as a nature-based religio-spiritual system and way of life that draws its inspiration from Nature, acknowledging Nature as a manifestation of Divinity.

We respect Nature. We acknowledge the cycle of ebb and flow, birth and death, creation and destruction, and the inherent value of life. We strive to avoid damage to any form of life.

We engage in magickal practice in so far as it is part of a sound spirituality. We reject any form of magick and magickal thrill seekers that seek(s) to overthrow the ambits of the laws of natural magick.

Our beliefs are based on the equality of the masculine and the feminine, and each member is free to interpret and experience such according to their own personal views.

CAM does not discriminate against anyone on the grounds of gender, sexual preference, race, religious belief, or spiritual praxis. We subscribe to the principal of tolerance, both within our membership and without. We choose to live in peace and strive to exist in harmony with all. We reject any form of proselytism or recruitment. We assert our right under the Constitution of South Africa in terms of:

  1. Protection against discrimination
  2. Freedom of expression
  3. Freedom of association
  4. Freedom of movement
  5. Freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion.

Lore of the Circle

The "Lore of the Circle" describes the behavior expected of CAM members to each other.

We can think of CAM as a vast chieftain's hall from the heroic age, and our fellow CAM members/supporters as our benchmates within that hall. To preserve peace in the hall and to protect the reputation of those who inhabit it, we have certain rules. These rules constitute the "Law of the Hall." – Lore of the Circle.

  1. Respect the deities and religious views of all circle participants.
  2. Abide no strife in the circle or between kin.

One must be able to speak one's mind candidly, but disagreements must never exceed the bounds of respect or courtesy. All within the circle are brothers and sisters and are to be treated appropriately.

  3. Concentrate on the positive

Our deeds and words must be such that the reputation of CAM, and of Paganism as a whole, grows more glorious because of our presence. Do good to your kin, grow in your might and main...and when we disagree among ourselves, let it be done out of the sight of others.

  4. Strive that Paganism shall live forever, though all the forces of chaos march against us.

Work for the good of the kindred in all ways that are honorable and noble.

  5. Deal with candor and forthrightness with all in the circle, and scorn the poison of gossip and intrigue.

Speak honestly and openly, and do not talk behind the backs of others.

  6. Envy not those who earn gifts, fame, and favor within the circle, but seek instead your own.

The glory given your brother or sister shines on you, as well; Let gold and bright fame not stir enmity among kin.

  7. Be open-handed and open-hearted, generous to aid kin and forward the aims of CAM.

Give gladly of time and effort, helping those in the circle and advancing our enterprise.

  8. Honor your word.
