warning Wicca, like any religion has its pitfalls. However there is no such thing as a Wiccan pope. There are however charismatic and charming folk who prey on the vulnerable and weak. It is your responsibility as a querant to inform yourself about what Wicca is and what it is not. If you rely on being spoon fed, then you will be preyed upon. Irresponsible, egotistical and gullible requests to ‘join’ covens often results in unfortunate and unpleasant experiences. There are good Wiccans out there and bad Wiccans, good witches and bad witches, good mages and bad.

If you come to Wicca because you are disenchanted with your previous religious background, and simply want to replace one religious system with another, you will be equally disillusioned. Those that come to Wicca because they seek power will find it – but it is only power over the weak. The ‘magick’ of Wicca resides in its mysteries, in the ebb and flow of the rhythms of life, and deep ritual connection, not in its spell craft.

You have the right to ask your prospective ‘teacher’, coven head, group leader etc their credentials. You have the further right to question those credentials. Should someone not oblige you with these details then you should move on. Question, question question; read, read, read.

Wicca is a mystery religion, and as such its mystical aspect can only be experienced. However, the 'knowledge' component features strongly. It is necessary to show oneself approved and as such the Elders of CAM take very seriously the discipline, academic portfolio, and syllabus deemed necessary to become a priest/ess of the Craft of the Wise. Serving as such will require guidance and mentorship, and CAM offers the necessary guidelines in the CAM lineage.

The Progressive Pagan Alliance

There is a new organization known as the PPA (Progressive Pagan Alliance), who stand in direct opposition to the SAPC (South African Pagan Council) and SAPRA (South African Pagan Rights Alliance).  It is radical in its approach and takes an extremely different viewpoint that we have up to now not considered.

The South African Pagan Council

The SAPC was inaugurated in December 2006 as a unifying body of like-minded Pagans with a vision of co-operative unity. With this in mind, we encourage the cross pollination of groups and individuals, always remembering to respect each others traditions without attempting to enforce our own. The Pagan Council is formulated on the Arthurian round table principle, all members therefore have equal rights, retaining autonomy and self-definition at all times. The guiding principle of the Council is “Live and let live”.

The SAPC is an ardent supporter of Earth based Religions, as such the SAPC promotes ecology and the principle of interconnectedness. To this end the Forum has started “Project Spinning Wheel” for ideas related to ecology.

The SAPC is actively involved in the reclamation of “Witchcraft” as a formal Pagan Religion. “Project Hypatia” is related to this subject.

The SA Government has instituted the “Moral Regeneration Movement” – SAPC encourages all SA Pagans to participate in this worthy cause.

The SAPC aims to facilitate a quorum of self-identified Pagans who wish to ascribe to its’ aims, share ideas and philosophies for the furthering of Paganism within our respective communities.

The forum is dedicated to those who seek common ground and trust in the ultimate well being of a strong Pagan community. Regardless of whether you represent an existing Pagan Organisation or speak only for yourself, you are invited to register as a member of the SAPC today. Help us realise the ideal of a united and co-operative Pagan front in South Africa.

To this end you are cordially invited to add your voice and support as a member.
